Full Moon Rising Over the Greenland Coast
9 January 2025Like a bright beacon in the empty skies above, the glowing orange moon rises over an equally desolate but vastly different landscape.
Far from civilization, the icecap of Greenland, with its nameless mountains and glaciers, floats by. Seen by few and visited by even fewer, the largest island in the world is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes on our planet.
I still remember one of my first flights as a young toddler back in 1987, gazing in awe at the alien landscapes below. Then, in 2011, at the age of 28, I saw the same mountains again during my first Atlantic crossing with the Boeing 747. No matter how many times I’ve crossed the Arctic icecap of Greenland since, I remain glued to the cockpit windows with a camera in hand.
Greenland. I believe this isolated part of the world will soon feature prominently in the news, playing a significant role in global politics due to its rich, untapped natural resources and deposits of rare minerals. The new president-elect, Trump, recently even suggested buying Greenland.
The parallels with Alaska are hard to ignore—beyond their stunning beauty and haunting wilderness, both are regions where the United States has shown interest. In 1867, the U.S. bought Alaska, and who knows… we might be looking at the future 51st state here. Let's hope its pristine natural beauty remains untouched, no matter how things unfold.
