Walking in the Air - Merry Christmas!

23 December 2018

Far above the clouds, Santa's sleigh is carrying presents and gifts across the world. Dressed in warmly, he traverses the coldest nights with only his diligent reindeers as companions. Guided by the stars and a full moon, he acts as a representative of the faceless cargo pilots all over the world, hidden from the public eye in countless anonymous freighters.

The weeks before Christmas are generally the busiest months of the world for Santa and his cargo-sled, with a high demand for goods and products that have to find their way from one continent to another.

I'm lucky enough to spend Christmas at home this year, but the caravan of air cargo goes on, keeping many pilots and other cargo-employees from home.

As I was crossing the midnight skies in this big Santa-operation last few weeks, I had plenty of time to ponder about a great many things. And while my eyes and mind drifted across the world below, cities, towns and villages slowly passed in and out of view I was wondering..
Would there be some young children's eyes looking up, noticing our dimly flashing lights among the stars in a sleepless night?

Invariably, that reminded me of a short video and song (youtube-link in the first comment) that enchanted me when I was a young boy. Looking up into the night sky with nothing but hopes and dreams of flying, it inspired me ever since.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Walking in the Air - Aled Jones

We're walking in the air
We're floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below are sleeping as we fly

I'm holding very tight
I'm riding in the midnight blue
I'm finding I can fly so high above with you

Far across the world
The villages go by like dreams
The rivers and the hills, the forests and the streams

Children gaze open mouthed
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below believes their eyes

We're surfing in the air
We're swimming in the frozen sky
We're drifting over icy mountains floating by

Suddenly swooping low
On an ocean deep
Rousing up a mighty monster from his sleep

And walking in the air
We're dancing in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly

We're walking in the air
We're walking in the air
